In 2020, a Malaysian government-owned Oil & Gas company began their goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
To accomplish this objective, the company realised that they needed to reduce and eradicate their routine flaring. However, they required accurate and reliable measurement to decrease the flare gas volumes, which wasn’t possible using their current flare gas meters.
The company planned an upgrade project for an offshore facility and commissioned Fluenta to substitute their old flare gas meters on their platform, which made it Malaysia’s first remotely controlled platform.
Project Overview
- Fluenta has always been capable of successfully replacing old and faulty meters for major plants and refineries around the world.
- Their market-leading transducers, variety of connections and configurations secures a unified and low-cost upgrade and install.
- To assist the company, Fluenta used 2’’ connections to install TFS transducers and their FGM 160 meters into the current pipe system, eliminating the need for new spool pieces or other mechanical work.
Project Challenges
- Due to the old flare gas metering systems that were being used, the company was facing measurement issues.
- The meters were performing poorly as they were exhibiting measurement errors such as spiking / paint brushing of the flow reading, the meter going backwards and in general, unsatisfactory measurement as a result of the being unable to handle the process conditions.
- These issues ultimately left the operators with no understanding on how they could reduce their flare gas volumes so that they were in line with their net-zero emissions targets.
- To avoid additional financial consequences, and to guarantee correct and consistent flare gas measurement, the company make the decision to upgrade their meters to Fluenta.
Project Results
- The 2’’ connections to install the TFS transducers and the FGM 160 meters allowed the upgrade to be successful, simple and inexpensive.
- Since the upgrade, the company hasn’t experienced any other measurement issues.
- The Fluenta flare gas meters are running consistently, creating precise measurement data and doing their part to reduce net-zero emissions.
- The company have been able to move one step closer to their 2050 goal, thanks to Fluenta.
